In January 2023, an exciting announcement was made by the U.S. State Department regarding the introduction of Welcome Corps. This innovative initiative aims to involve American citizens in the refugee resettlement program by enabling them to privately sponsor refugees. While non-profit organizations have traditionally been the main partners of the State Department in providing resettlement assistance to newly arrived refugees, the government now seeks to enhance and expand the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) through Welcome Corps. By doing so, the nation's capacity to accommodate a greater number of refugees will be improved, offering a solution to ongoing humanitarian crises in countries such as Afghanistan, Ukraine, and others. Welcome Corps represents one of the most significant advancements in USRAP since its establishment in 1980, empowering everyday Americans to have a direct and meaningful impact on both the world and their local communities through private refugee sponsorship.
